review 1: The middle ages was a desperate, dreary time period and that shows quite starkly in this novel. At times it was difficult to continue reading simply because of the constant challenges faced by the peasants. There are some intriguing secrets held by the characters that keep you reading. The final happy resolution seemed sudden & odd given the bleakness of the bulk of the novel. An interesting look at the time period, however.

Life as a woman has never been easy (still a struggle in many places) but it was a real challenge when the slightest oddity of behavior could have you killed as a witch.
