review 1: The very short version:-writing: 4 stars-story: 4.5 stars-characters: 4 stars-accessibility: 3.5 stars-setting: 3.5 stars-metaphysics/magic/sufficiently advance technology: 4 starsOverall I would bounce between calling this a 3.5 or 4 star collection. These are running averages for what was a somewhat unusual collection. If you are looking for a collection of primarily fantasy stories and like the theme of unnatural creatures you will probably enjoy this. If, however, you do not find authors from earlier periods (the oldest story was first published in 1885, the newest in 2014) your cup of tea this might not be for you.The overall quality is good. Variety is excellent. One can see how all of these stories would appeal to Neil Gaiman's tastes.I found the mix of styles and w... moreriters from a wide variety of periods refreshing. Gaiman does a great service by pointing us towards some authors we may never have heard of or neglected.
review 2: I liked each and every short story featured in this anthology. But none outdid all the others which can be good or bad for me. What I mean to say is I did not find a story that was outstanding for me, a story that I'll remember for a long time and I'll want to read it several times. That is why it did not feel like a great anthology. But it was good because it exposed to works by authors I had never even heard of. I hadn't read anything from most of the authors in this anthology. I that respect for me it was a good anthology. Also because it delivered on its purpose to show a variety of imaginative and fantastical creatures, unnatural creatures. less
