review 1: An excellent read!! Starting this book, I knew the basics of the Battle of the Crater and now I am so glad that I read it. Even though this is a book of historical fiction, the historical facts of the building of the mine and the battle that followed are there. Listening from the Union side of the battle, with few views from the Confederate side, the reader gets a great building of the story of the battle plan, battle and the members of the Union Colored Troops. Reading of the gallantry of the colored troops of the 4th division of the 9th Corp is very informative and humbling to hear the sacrifice of these troops and their white counterparts. And also reading the ending and aftermath of the battle of how they were treated is equally humbling. I really have wondered how t... morehe Union took four years to wear down the Confederacy. I, through my schooling and individual reading, assumed, like most, that the Confederacy had many of the great military minds of the time and this is what held the Union at bay for so long despite the Union advantages of men and material. After reading this book, again even though a work of fiction, I can believe that in addition to the military brain trust of the Confederacy(And the Confederacy did have it's share military idiots), the mistakes of the Union generals in the Army of the Potomic in this battle, as well as other battles helped to prolong the Civil War. It was any wonder that the Union won the war at all because of this. This is an excellent book and I highly recommend this book to everyone, especially to those who love historical fiction and Civil War history.
review 2: One of the greatest recommendations for reading Gingrich & Forstchen is their ability to insert their readers into the emotions and urgencies of decision and risk. So it is with the Battle of the Crater. Relive the sense of near failure on the battlegrounds of the Civil War. Then feel yourself living in the hearts and minds of the negro troops who desperately want to prove their worth and to be a part of their own destiny for the first time in their lives. The horrors and perils of war are vivid and I will never forget this account of the war that shaped our world. less
