review 1: Straight forward but good. It was well-written and interesting. It shed light on events I know little about, which to me makes it worth my time. I certainly recommend it to fellow history buffs. My wife got it for me as a present, and for the very first book she purchased she did a good job. I liked it a lot and for civil war novel it has a lot to offer. I also appreciated it's simplicity and ease. It wasn't as dense as other civil war novels I've read. I didn't drown in it, but it still felt authentic.
review 2: For the record, I did NOT read this because I agree with all of Newt's politics but instead, read it for the subject matter. I have always been interested in the Civil War period, but have never found the time to read about it, until now. This book re
... morecalls the events leading up to the infamous battle in Petersburg, VA that occurred on July 30, 1864, called the “Battle of the Crater.” To be specific, the plan involved digging a tunnel under Confederate lines and lining it with explosives. The plan should have been an Union victory but due to mistakes being made at the last minute by two of the generals involved, the outcome was actually the opposite. The book is mostly told through the eyes of the fictional James Reilly, illustrator for Harper's Weekly and friend of President Abraham Lincoln. President Lincoln has hired James to be a spy for him during the following months and report back a true account of the war. Soon after, James meets and befriends Sergeant Major Garland White of the 28th United States Colored Troops(USCT), a former escaped slave and minister. More than 4,000 USCT participated in this battle, making it one of the largest formation of African-American soldiers in the history of the Civil War. I don't know how this one matches up with the other Crater accounts, but it was a great place to start. less

Decent book. It was pretty cool to learn that some of it was actually based on truth.
