review 1: Really enjoyed this book. Great pictures of small town (more village than town) life in rural Ireland in the Thirties complete with all the gossip, scandal, misogyny and snobbery that the period and the setting demands. A scammer arrives in the person of a healer and throws a lighted match into the tinderbox that is this small town. Great characters well realised in all their flawed humanity, beautifully written. You'll enjoy it!
review 2: I picked up this book at my Mum's and was drawn into it immediately, and ended up bringing it home with me, even though I already have shelves of books waiting to be read. It dipped a bit in the middle and began to get a bit monotonous, and really could have done with losing 30-50 pages, but then the speed picked up and ther... moree was lots crammed into the end. Overall I enjoyed it, and found the characters interesting and well drawn, although I wouldn't be rushing out to find her next book either. As we Irish say, it was grand. less
