review 1: The artwork was absolutely gorgeous. So gorgeous in fact that I would have read the entirety of this work without words. However, I thought the poetry was so-so. Some of the rhyming was quite clever and Hayes clearly put a lot of work into the poetry. But I felt at times that the rhyming was unnecessary. I admire the effort of trying to take something like The Rime of the Ancient Mariner and putting a new twist on it...but it's The Rime of the Ancient Mariner!!! I was glad I read this but I didn't love it.
review 2: The artwork is magical and I love how Hayes captures the rhythm and magic of Coleridge's poem but updates it with his own modern twists. Yes, the message and meaning of the two poems have similarities but are ultimately different-- while Coleridge'... mores is embedded with ambiguities, Hayes's is a spelled out ode to environmental awareness and the destructive power of human hubris, I think that Hayes's work is a great complement to Coleridge's masterpiece. less
