review 1: This is an absolutely fantastic book. Because I had not read anything by this author I borrowed the book from our public library, read it and was so enthralled by it that I was compelled to buy the book so I could re-read and refer to it in the future. This is the finest natural history book I have read since Scott Weidensaul's Living on the Wind. This book is not just about ornithology but encompasses humankind, philosophy, physiology, logic and many wonders of nature.
review 2: I loved this book! Wonderful writer, wonderful stories, very absorbing! I have a special fascination with the aesthetic sensibilities of bowerbirds and his chapter on them is terrific. Do they have artistic sensibilities? Stryker makes a convincing case for expanding our understandi... moreng of what "art" is. He does the same thing with expanding our understanding of what "love" is with his touching story of the albatross. A whimsical lovely book, highly recommended. less
