review 1: I have to admit that this is one of the best books I have read in a long long time and goes into my top 10 all-time list. The books is about the brain and neuroplasticity. In simple terms it says that the brain isn’t a hard wired and fixed entity which is fixed after your youth but can be changed in the face of the greatest damage done to it. The book gets incredibly interesting near the end especially when it talks about culture and the brain and some of the concepts that it points out are mind-blowingly and mouth-wateringly amazing. Its full of anecdotes and small experiments some of which you can try out yourself and cannot resist to do just that. The books covers areas such as building a better brain, redesigning your brain, acquiring tastes and love, stroke victims... more moving again, unlocking your brain, pain, imagination, turning our ghosts into our ancestors, rejuvenation, more than the sum of its parts, the culturally modified brain and plasticity and progress. Massively recommended.
review 2: Neuroplasticity has in the past decade become a buzzword and this a great book to read in order understand why this is so. Neuroscientists and behavioural experts used to believe that brain anatomy was fixed; that when brain cells failed to develop properly, were injured or died, they could not be replaced. In that vein, it was also believed that since the brain could not be changed, then human nature or behavior is fixed and cannot be changed as well.In the early 70s, that began to change when a series of discoveries showed that the brain could reorganize itself so that many circuits which were previously thought to be hardwired could be taught to restructure so as to take over parts of the brain that have failed.Highly informative, the book has a good balance of empirical research and case studies. less
