review 1: Great detail on life after the horrific Thirty Years War. Typical German castle town -- the caste divisions, the daily life, the pervasive memory of the earlier witch hunts: it's all here. Add an unlikely romance, superstitions, and an executioner with torn emotions as to his profession (one he's unable to change)….and you have a good story. Don't know if it's the translation, but I found a little too much detail in wrapping up at the end. Other than that, I highly recommend
review 2: The story lines related to the hangman's family and history were interesting. The rest was just okay. The mystery contained a lot of filler and I just wanted to get through it. Finding out that the author is a descendant of the characters in the story was intriguing. I apprecia
... moreted the story more after I learned that the descriptions related to the hangman's job were based on research and not pure fiction. Also, not sure why it was called the "Hangman's Daughter" because she was really a supporting character, not the main sleuth. less

It had some Scooby Doo moments, but a good read. The characters make the book.
