review 1: I love this book. Barbara was a brilliant main character. I sympathized with her at times and was angry at her at times for her actions during her missionary stay in Siam and her explorations in Europe. She felt like an old friend that called you to debate her life choices. I loved the plot, the characters and the ending. Beautiful book.Also--people call this Christian fiction? Don't let that turn you off...I completely missed any Christian undertones and in fact felt that it was quite critical of missionaries and Christian charity work.
review 2: This book is a fictional account of the author's grandmother's own experiences as a wife of a medical missionary during the 1920's in Siam (Thailand). This is called a Christian novel, but I found no evidence of it b
... moreeing so. Most of the story takes place in a remote village and is about the internal struggles (told in 1st person) of Barbara Perkins - she left a promising classical singing career to follow her husband, Harvey into the remote jungle. She has no role in this journey except to be the wife of Harvey so she has a lack of purpose, lack of faith, doubt, and lots of internal struggles. So to find meaning and purpose in her life she eventually leaves Harvey, puts her daughters in boarding school, and travels to Rome and Paris to pursue her singing career. The descriptions of Philadelphia, Siam, Bangkok, Rome, and Paris are amazing; but, for me, the story falls flat (she's self absorbed) and is repetitive is some places. Ending - does she or doesn't she find meaning and go back to Harvey??? less
