review 1: This was an "okay" read. I selected this one for my book clubs first read of the membership year and all in all wasnt disappointed. The books title I believe is very misleading. It felt as if I was reading something by Tyler Perry. Its very preachy, with real life situations that I think was in some cases drastically handled. Dont get me wrong, the beginning of the book was VERY good. Then something went wrong in the story line ---- this is from my perspective ----....The wording in the book just wasnt realistic, I felt like I was "reading" something. Again, the story line is "okay" but I think the story in its entirety was a bit "over done" and not very realistic. Also, it was VERY predictable.
review 2: What Is Done In The DarkThis was a highly emotional read
... more. When everything comes to light it will leave you breathless. This novel gives new meaning to the phrase “you can't choose your family.” Man, this family was horrible and the secrets are deadly. How much can one person take? Was the motto for Sofie; seems like if it wasn't for bad luck she would have no luck at all. Well it didn't start out that way, but when Sofie finds out she has been betrayed by her fiancé Grayston Miles and her best friend who happens to be her cousin Layla James, everything in her life just goes downhill to the point you have to wonder what your own personal breaking point is.I enjoyed the read but I did feel that there was too much drama. It seemed like “damn what else does this family have in the closet?” How much could this family, more specifically Sofie, take before she breaks? With some important lessons to learn I was glad that this novel is not over preachy. It does have religious overtones and they were appropriate for the situations at hand. I was however turned off by the constant flip flopping in the relationship naming of the characters i.e. cousin/brother, cousin/sister. While there was a great explanation given much later in the book, as the story is unfolding it made for a taxing read. Layla’s relationship was never explained as to how she became a cousin and that left me confused as it seems she should be considered an aunt. I have one other huge issue but I would consider it a spoiler and won't be mention it as I don't want to ruin it for potential readers. All in all this is a pretty good novel and I would recommend it. SiStar TeaARC Book Club Inc.3.5 Star rating. less
