review 1: Returning from trsvelling abroad to deal with the sale of her late godmother's house in York, Grace Trewe begins to experience episodes in which she appears to be reliving the traumatic events in the life of an Elizabethan woman, Hawise Aske. The uncanny echoes of Grace's own recent experiences raise the question of whether she is suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder or really being "possessed" by a character from the past. I have to say I found the sections featuring Hawise more vividly described and more interesting than the modern day story. This was possibly because I found Grace mildly irritating and Hawise a more engaging and well-rounded character. Overall an enjoyable read.
review 2: Very enjoyable and atmospheric time-slip tale reminiscent
... more of the novels of Barbara Erskine, one of my favourite writers. In Elizabethan York, Hawise suffers a horrific Fate - she's drowned as a witch. The injustice of this and the horror of leaving behind a young daughter means her spirit cannot rest. In the present, Grace comes to York to sell her late godmother's house - she's suffering from her own watery trauma namely experiencing the Boxing Day tsunami. She finds herself reliving Hawise's life which puts her own in danger. If you enjoy this genre, this is highly recommended! less
