review 1: I spent several hours on the sofa (in front of the fire with Christmas tree lights twinkling, very cosy) reading the whole of 'The Memory of Midnight'. I felt as if I was in a bubble unaware of everything else. Gripping is definitely the right word. I enjoyed it more than 'Time's Echo' although at times I don't know if 'enjoy' is the right word - it is definitely darker and more disturbing than Pamela's first novel - and the villain Ralph makes Francis from 'Time's Echo' seem like Prince Charming! The ending was a heart racer and without giving too much away, I prefer my imagined alternative conclusion!

... moreut I did eventually get into it and when I did I couldn't put it down. The characters are well formed and likeable. The two lives of Tess and Nell work really well together. I loved the insight into the everyday life of 16th century York, the historical detail was really interesting but it didn't take over. I will definitely be reading Pamela Hartshornes next novel. less
