review 1: In the beginning of this book, I didn't care much for the main character. She seemed very weak and it was making me not care about her enough to really enjoy the book. It picked up towards the middle and at the end, I was very satisfied with the read. It was a good immigrant story, though a bit contrived at times. I liked that she finally made a friend who stuck by her. Historically speaking, it seemed pretty accurate.
review 2: The book was OK. I liked the historical details, but the memory of the book has already faded, and it's only been about a week since I finished it. The ending is predictable. I didn't feel like there was a lot of depth to the characters, although the research into the immigration, living conditions, and medical practices of the tim... moree seemed extensive. I think the factual details of the period saved the book from being boring. less
