review 1: A historical fiction about Irma from Opi, Italy who is very, very poor and plain. Luckily, she is a talented seamstress who has courage and determination. Different events that happen to her change the paths she chooses to take with her life. One of the things that bothered me was waiting until chapter 14 to find out what actual year this story takes place. From events described, I could guess but not until three-fourths of the way through the book was that guess confirmed. There were parts of this story that I didn't personally like but the story was compelling and I enjoyed reading it.
review 2: This book is a moving story about an Italian immigrant trying to make it in America. Irma, a young Italian woman, leaves her tiny Italian village to seek a bette
... morer future in America. She is relatable and has a good narrative that flows smoothly throughout the entire book. The best part of the book for me was Irma's inner dialogue about American things. The author always carefully describes things from Irma's perspective so that not only can the reader to see things as Irma they also understand how Irma's life in a small village and religious views molds her thoughts. This book is honest when it comes to the treatment of immigrants. Although Irma caught some lucky breaks, overall her story was believable and showed both the positive and negative of immigrant life in America. The connections that Irma makes with others are strong and believable. Her narrative never loses focus and although she faces life altering events, her voice never loses its character. less

This book was fine but like so many other books I've read. Also had an abrupt ending in my opinion.
