review 1: No, the reviews from others did not sway my opinion of this book. They were accurate. This is by no means Cornwall's best. I found it waaaay too wordy. I do not need three plus pages of Lucy's description, etc. She repeated a lot of info which is not necessary if one is capable of reading at this level I would think she does not need to retell what she mentioned in previous chapters. Also, (tell us how you really feel) I found myself getting angry that Scarpetta was so self-conscious, self-defeating, etc. She's a heroine! Throughout this story she second guesses herself and demeans herself throughout. I found it not only aggravating but not probable for a woman like her. This book was riddled with her self image issues. Issues I never read in previous books. Sc... morearpetta also did and said things I cannot imagine a woman in an advanced field would do, say, believe. Augh.... Just not a favored Cornwell book.
review 2: Wow. I barely know where to begin. This book is unbelievably bad. Horrendous. Execrable. Just goes to show, an author with a name can get any drivel published, while too many readers will buy a book simply because of that name. Makes me sad. I loved the first half-dozen or so Scarpetta books. Hardly can believe that this dreck was written by the same person. The first three-quarters of the book should have taken about 30 pages to convey. But there is so little story, such a dearth of plot developments, that Cornwell stretches and stretches and stretches (and stretches) her writing with inane dialgoue, meaningless and repetitive description, and tediously non-sensical filler. It made my head hurt. And she has forgotten how to build any sense of mystery or suspense. She now relies on Benton's not telling her something, Lucy not revealing something, both of them acting secretive and mysterious. Over and over and over again. (Banging my head against the wall.) I ended up not finishing the book. Couldn't force myself to do it. less

Was actually quite nice to have Kay so unsure of herself for once. Although this storyline was much less autopsy based than previous books, it was great to have the narrative back from Kay's perspective. I certainly didn't expect a longstanding colleague to meet their end and I'm rather surprised at Kay's seemingly lack of sadness over their death. I did, however, really enjoy there being more characters in this book other than the usual 'Holy Trinity' that are Lucy, Marino and Wesley. Although there was some of the usual love/hate remarks which often make me wonder how they've lasted in each others' company for so long, the narrative brought more from the 'outside in' which was refreshing.

Patricia Cornwell is one of my favorite authors. I have been reading about Kay Scarpetta for more than 10 years. Feel like I know Dr Scarpetta, Pete Marino, Benton, and Lucy fairly well. This book however was, truth be told, boring. It had more thoughts than actual conversations and the investigations of the murders weren't as good as they usual are. I couldn't even finish it. Even though I am somewhat disappointed in this book, I will always read Patricia Cornwell and look forward to the next one.

Good story but slow and too much internal dialogue.
