review 1: I am a long time Scarpetta fan. I thought the books had lost a little of their Scarpetta-ness for a few years, but with Red Mist, Cornwell seemed to recapture that special dynamic that exists in the books. I have enjoyed each book since then. This one was no exception, but I wasn't happy with the ending. It's obviously a plot that will be carried over into the next book in the series, but the way it ended felt a rushed to me. I didn't like having the most exciting moment happen as a flashback in an epilogue either.I think what I'm saying is this book wasn't ENOUGH Scarpetta, and I'm already looking forward to the next one. Here are the things I did like:* Marino back in the police force and back to his cocky, sarcastic self.* Less Lucy as a whiny, weird teenager-20-ish ... moreperson and more Lucy as a developing adult* Sock stayed alive. If Sock dies because of some serial killer/bad guy, I'm not reading anymore. Here me, Patricia? Sock must die a peaceful happy death, after having a special home-cooked Scarpetta meal.* General plot excitement and good diversions. I was all over the place trying to figure this one out, even thinking maybe there would be drones involved.
review 2: I thought this book was definitely better than her past few. There were some questions left unanswered throughout the book that I would have liked to have seen answered; like why particular people were picked to be murdered, what the connection was. I read enough of her early books (almost all of them) and knew immediately who the return character was and felt that part of the book was more like the "old days". I would still like to see the characters NOT be so negative, down and bitter...It depresses me to read some of the interactions. I gave it a 4 due mostly to the improvement in the story line. Hopefully the Scapetta stories continue to get better. less
