review 1: I'd give this a 3.75. Years ago, my mother lent me a book on tape (really, cassettes!) called Midwives and from that moment, I was fascinated by midwifery. I really enjoyed this story of a woman who works as a midwife in impoverished West Virginia during a time of tense race relations and a change in how midwives are viewed and employed. I was left wanting more in terms of the author's writing style, but I really enjoyed the plot.
review 2: I liked it more than I thought I was going to when first diving into the book. I even have a few favorite quotes now courtesy of this book. Some of the birth stories seem a bit improbable, but not terrifically so. I felt Patience, the midwife, protagonist of the story, was a great character and did feel some connection wi
... moreth her. I was elated at the end. I read a few reviews and saw that some people were disappointed that there was very little connection to mothers at the time of the birth (as in, Patience was called in last minute and had no real relationship with the mother), but midwifery as a whole back then was not the midwifery we see today. Prenatal care wasn't the norm and calling a midwife in last minute was very likely. The story itself was multifaceted and not just a timeline of events described by a midwife. I highly recommend the book. less
