review 1: Nora's Chicks is about a little girl named Nora who emigrated to the United States from Russia and settles in the midwest. With no one around for miles, she grows lonely fast and looks for a friend. She eventually finds friends in the chicks her father buys, after convincing him not to eat them. This was a really cute picture book and it was simple, but very well done. I liked the art style and just the overall plot. I usually don't like historical fiction, but this was cute enough to make me like it.
review 2: This one really just didn't capture my attention, language of story seemed too dated to reach children in 2013. I did however, like the Russian motifs very faintly suggested in the illustrations and that element seemed to lessen the longer the family was
... more living in the U.S. which seemed very believable. However, here we have a little girl whose pets are chickens which also seem to be a current pet of choice for urban dwellers. Sorry but my dislike of chickens is showing: you can not train them, they pick at you and they are not cuddly. So was this story a little historical remembrance or something to go with the current chicken interest? I really expect more from Candlewick Press. less
