review 1: Historical Fiction is my favorite and Giff does it well. I have loved all the books I've read by this author, but this one was a disappointed for me. It lacked character depth, a thesis, moving story-line, and unpredictability. There were some neat ideas, but it seemed like they got printed before they were completely formulated. The whole ghost thing was just weird and cheesy. I listened to it and maybe it was just a bad reader, but I couldn't get into this one.
review 2: World War II- Jayna lives in upstate New York. She was in foster care until her older brother was old enough to take care of her. She has been happy with her brother, but now he is going to war & she is going to have to live with a neighbor lady up the street. Around this time, she sta
... morerts to see a ghost. A few weeks go by & she gets a telegram saying her brother has been lost at sea. She starts looking through the box he told her was stuff from their parents. There she finds a cookbook in french & a picture of a woman standing below a bakery sign. She is convinced this is her grandmother & decides to go find her family. She takes a bus to New York & ends up on Coney Island. Unfortunately, someone steals her suitcase. She still makes it to the bakery & talks the lady into letting her stay with them. Jayna is happy there & makes friends. It turns out that the bakery owner is not her grandmother, but instead a friend of her grandmother. The ghost is able to bring the lucky stone her brother gave her to him in the middle of the ocean, to remind him to hang on. He sees it & struggles on, eventually he finds and island and is rescued. Overall, I did enjoy this book. It was a very quick read & would be a good historic fiction option for a younger reader. It really had no violence or cursing. I tried to listen to it on audio, but found it hard to follow. less
