review 1: ::sigh:: I kept saying it wasn't the narrators fault that I didn't like this book, but now I'm not so sure. I couldn't finish this one and I don't intend to. I'd really like to know how the story ends, which means it should be a good story right? But I can't seem to connect with the characters, I feel like I'm being preached at, and I don't like the writing style. I think this is a case of "good in theory bad in practice."
review 2: Happy endings abound and the story is wrapped up nicely in little packages tied with bows. That is not the first impression you get when you start reading. ... moree—literally. One thing leads to another thing... Suddenly, the three major characters have all gone down paths with obstacles that block the way they have come. The only way left to them is to keep going forward.Aside from how things happen a little too neatly for a man, even a genius, to anticipate, the world of Atherton is deeper still in its mysteries. It's exciting to see where Patrick Carman's imagination has led him. Little bug pens, a key to a living spaceship, a magic block of powder and the whole system of production. It seems that there is little in the world that Dr. Harding has not touched or influenced somehow with his own agenda hidden, but once the first domino is felled, the end comes rushing in to view. It was quite exhilarating. less
