review 1: this is a great book that really show how people can work together to survive.the story really kept me in suspension when Edgar was climbing away from raging waves that were sinking the highlands and when his friends were inside the inferno. There was a sad part to the story that was really unexpected that made me really feel sad for Edgar.Though it was a good book ,the beginning of the story got me really confused and I had to sit and wonder what was happening so far.I kinda thought the book was really slow at the middle of the story.
review 2: This book suffered from a lot of the same downfalls as the first one -- head-hopping, authorial intrusion, too much focus on the perspective of the adult characters. And because it's more plot-driven than character drive
... moren, there were a lot of places where I was just plain bored. I remain more interested in the "backstory" to this series than the present story, so this book held my interest best around the middle, where it gave the backstory some attention. The creatures created to populate Atherton are truly fascinating -- I have a feeling Patrick Carman has strange dreams at night. It's a solid middle-grade adventure story, but it's shortcomings as a book make me long to see it as a movie instead. less
