review 1: This was promised as a cross between Ellen Raskin's superb The Westing Game and Roald Dahl's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Sadly, it didn't have the flat-out cleverness of the former or the magic of the latter. That said, my kids (5 and 8) loved it. No matter how far-fetched Leo's adventures in the Whippet Hotel became, they lapped it up and are eager to hear Book No 2.I could see this becoming an enjoyable but slightly unmemorable family film complete with 3D special effects and CGI ducks.
review 2: I liked the imagination and likable characters in this book. Because I don't have an easy time picturing mechanics, I was sometimes confused about what the machines were doing or what the rooms looked like. I appreciated a main theme of the book also. I won't
... more give that away though. :)Coincidentally I was at Chenango Valley State Park yesterday and learned that a merganser is a type of duck! less

The detailed descriptions in the book make it interesting to read. I also like the characters.

A humorous story with an ever-changing hotel. I think this would make a great read-aloud.
