review 1: I'm giving this three stars even though I didn't finish it because I can see why a kid in the target audience age range might really enjoy it. The concept is very cool--a dystopian society set in a medieval fantasy world. The main character is quite likable. There is a lot of action and the writing is good. But I could not move past the inconsistencies, the lack of logic when it comes to the way the society acted regarding the ranking, and the lack of logic in much of the plot. It meandered and went in circles and I got tired of feeling like the story wasn't really moving forward and Al wasn't getting answers, except answers that came too late from people who could have and should have done something long before Al's life was in danger.Anyway, I got about halfway through be... morefore I realized I just couldn't finish it. I'm hanging on to my copy, though, as one of my kids may decide to give it a try.
review 2: The idea of this story was very original, and the rest of it was very creative as well. A society ruled by dragons? People's worth being determined by how much magic they could hold? Cullers that killed off those unable to gain magic? Who thinks of this stuff?! Certainly not me. A great read for adventure-loving boys like my brothers, and pretty enjoyable even to boring people like me. :) The ending seemed just a bit rushed, and some of the characters seemed a bit stereotypical, but other than that, it was pretty good! less

Meh times a billion. Recycled plot, cutout characters, and slightly racists descriptions.
