review 1: This is an excellent first book. The beginning pages are a bit rough, and there are a few editing errors, but they are easily overlooked by the quality and originality in the story. Being a first book, the author does not over-reach and try for epic world-building or deep, complicated layers of characters. Rather, the story is direct, moves along at a nice pace, and builds up to a perfect pitch at the end.Written in the modern fantasy style that makes a mockery of the assumptions that are inherent to the genre.
review 2: I quite enjoyed this, although I found it a little frustrating. Aside from the dozens of spelling mistakes (and possibly auto-correct mistakes too - inappropriate, but correctly spelled words throughout), I thought the story was too short and b
... moreeaten out quite thinly to fill up a novel. I found it quite tedious in places and found myself skipping through paragraphs so that I could finish it. I'd lost interest about three quarters of the way through - the only thing that kept me going was that the plot wasn't as predictable as most comedy fantasies and the characters were thoroughly likeable. The premise itself is very funny, but the writing style - for my taste - wasn't. There were a few odd laugh out loud moments, but not many. But that's probably just down to my particular sense of humour, given the amount of people who found it hilarious. The ending was quite disappointing, being more of a set-up for the next book than an end to the story, and it all felt a little rushed, wrapping the whole thing up in only a few pages from the end.So it was okay; some very likeable characters in a lovely short story that might have been better 150 pages tighter, or part of a more substantial story with some nice references to modern cultural issues. Didn't compel me to read the sequel. less

starts at five stars and then gradually degenerates into less and less, in summary, awful ending
Hardy
Phenomenal, clearly a set up for things to come but a nicely contained story none the less.

Fun and self-deprecating.
