review 1: This book is wonderful. My Lila loves little boxes and collects them. After reading this story, she asked for a cigar box and a few matchboxes to create her own diary. My husband happened to have both of these and gave them to her. It's amazing to see a book inspire your child. She's definitely a collector of odd things and a storyteller, just like the great grandfather in the book. I liked how the filled matchboxes represented his immigration journey from Italy to the United States. Very unique way of engaging a young reader in history, by organizing the information into small stories. In a technology driven world, it's nice to read about the past and different ways people went about documenting their journeys. It reminded me of the tins kids used to collect their favorit... moree baseball cards and treasures. I also liked how this book shows you the desire people have to tell their stories. Although GG could not read as a young boy, he found a way to collect and remember his stories. Our hands were meant to write and our eyes to read.
review 2: The Matchbox Diary reminds us how important the past can be to our present. Told only in dialogue, the story is very engaging. Fleischman, P. (2013). The matchbox diary.
