review 1: This is a bittersweet story about a 26-year-old woman named Amy who is stuck in a rut -- she doesn't like her job, her mom doesn't understand her and she just broke up with her jerk boyfriend. There are only two things she enjoys: watching a TV show called Mr. Dangerous and talking on the phone with her friend Michael, who moved away to San Francisco. The few times she goes out on a date she is overcome with anxiety and obsesses over mistakes she's made with men.The cartoonist drew Amy's angst well, including flashbacks to her childhood and past relationships. This seemed to be a very personal story for the author, and I was impressed by how well he conveyed Amy's emotions about her body, her sexual experiences and her uncertainty around men.Things come to a head for Amy w... morehen she sticks up for a coworker and risks getting fired. I was happy to see Amy grow in confidence by the end of the story (otherwise this book would have been too bleak).I was impressed enough with this graphic novel that I plan to look up other ones by Paul Hornschemeier.
review 2: After the first four chapters I was not really into Life with Mr Dangerous. I was not sure what it was getting at, it felt a little too abstract and out of reach and I suspected that it was going to go nowhere. Initially I didn’t warm to the main character of Amy, finding her whiny and self sabotaging. However most people would probably come across like this if you were subject to their innermost dialogue and from chapter five onwards I warmed to Amy and her story. I found the presentation of the head-space of a mid-twenties female eerily recognisable and believable. The internal drama of everyday worries was well pitched and despite my earlier concerns the story did have a place to go. Straight after finishing the book I awarded three stars, but it has lingered with me and I have increased it to four, as the more I think about it the more I like it. less
