DARK MATTER by Blake Crouch
August 24th 2017, Pan Macmillan

“Are you happy with your life?”

Those are the last words Jason Dessen hears before the masked abductor knocks him unconscious.

Before he awakens to find himself strapped to a gurney, surrounded by strangers in hazmat suits.

Before a man Jason’s never met smiles down at him and says, “Welcome back, my friend.”

In this world he’s woken up to, Jason’s life is not the one he knows. His wife is not his wife. His son was never born. And Jason is not an ordinary college physics professor, but a celebrated genius who has achieved something remarkable. Something impossible.

Is it this world or the other that’s the dream? And even if the home he remembers is real, how can Jason possibly make it back to the family he loves? The answers lie in a journey more wondrous and horrifying than anything he could’ve imagined—one that will force him to confront the darkest parts of himself even as he battles a terrifying, seemingly unbeatable foe.

From the author of the bestselling Wayward Pines trilogy, Dark Matter is a brilliantly plotted tale that is at once sweeping and intimate, mind-bendingly strange and profoundly human—a relentlessly surprising science-fiction thriller about choices, paths not taken, and how far we’ll go to claim the lives we dream of.

WOWSERS! This was not the read I thought it would be when I picked up DARK MATTER. I had seen SO much praise across social media for this book, so I knew I had to get involved and see whether I enjoyed the story as much as it had been hyped. The answer to that question is ‘HELL YES!’.

I knew from the get-go that this would be more of a science-fiction thriller as the blurb would suggest. How a man can wake up knowing that this life is not his own. This is NOT a time travel/outer space story – so if that’s what you are looking for, then DARK MATTER is not for you. If however, you are looking for a story about alternative realities and in turn ‘dark matter’ then this book will grab you by the short and curlies and send you on a rollercoaster!

This is an incredibly fast paced book and can easily be read in a day if you allow yourself some solid reading hours. The writing is slick, to the point and descriptive in a way so not to bore the reader. Even when explaining some of the sciences behind the plot – I was more interested than turned off – which is unfortunately sometimes why I struggle with science fiction.

DARK MATTER is one of those books that makes you sit back for a moment and ask yourself; What would I do in this situation? Am I happy with my life? Not many books have this affect on me, I usually take them face value and enjoy them as intended. But every once in a while, you get a book like this which does make you think, and THAT is the reason I would recommend this book to pretty much everyone. Whether it is your favoured genre or not. Every reader can get something from DARK MATTER.

Let’s just hope we get those same feelings with the movie……..
