review 1: I can't pull the trigger on the 5, since I reserve that for books that I absolutely loved reading, but this was a very good conclusion to a very enjoyable series. It would have been easy for Kearney to manufacture a reason why Corvus invades the empire, but he didn't succumb to the tempation. Corvus is a conquerer, pure and simple. He has principles and is likable, but he's out for the glory and to make history without making any excuses. Rictus is built for war; also principled but is totally unapologetic about slaughering farmers unfortunate enough to be levied into an opposing army. Great characters, great series.
review 2: Imagine Alexander the Great conquering ancient Greece and using the Spartans to spearhead his army as he conquers Persia ... that i
... mores much like the story of this trilogy. Kings of Morning is the final edition to this story, exploring an alternate world with a great many similarities to ours. The story is very realistic and well written, capturing the development of the characters and cultures expertly. An enjoyable and insightful story, Kearney does not disappoint! Kearney's descriptions of military tactics and life in a legion seem very accurate and rich. The gruelling battles, harsh living conditions and the brutality of fighting in a phalanx are all very compelling. Conversely, Kearney makes real the isolation and iron clad divisions of the Kefre caste system. Much like our ancient Persians, the culture of the royalty is an intruiging mix of surrealistic opulence built upon slavery, serfdom and horrific living conditions, bereft of hope. less

The story of the revised history of an Alexanderesque figure continues. Still as interesting.
