review 1: Mr. Kearney writes quite a few lyrical passages. His descriptive prose is exceptional while generally not pulling me too far out of the story. Further, he writes clear action scenes. I could almost always figure out exactly what happened without any backtracking. He presents an entirely non-Earth world (hey, two moons!) and develops most of it nicely. I did not notice any horrible failures in the world building. His internal (omniscient) views were also quite good. I enjoyed being in the protagonist's head.I enjoyed most of his made-up words. They mixed well with largely Greek-inspired clothing and such. Would have been nice to know a pasang was a half-mile BEFORE reading the glossary. It seems rare to read a whole-new-world fantasy novel that doesn't include magic. T... morehat was refreshing, even if the Kefir race was presented as vaguely inhuman. The other races were more evenly described and feasible to me.So why only three stars in my overall rating? I didn't feel as wonderful about his character interactions. Some characters felt two-dimensional. Some of the plot felt forced. Without any end-spoilers, "Jason, c'mon, I need to drag you to one more scene!" Did any of you NOT know what was going to happen? That is an example of being too predictable, unlike how the whole book opens. I loved how I expected a bad end to the first scene but it turned out to just be the start. So he was uneven in this regard.I liked it enough to continue the series.

Slow start, but difficult to put down when it picked its pace.
