review 1: Great piece of anthropomorphic magical realism spy/espionage. Quite the mix of genres combined into one tale! Not being a cat person myself, I can't quite figure out why I'm so attracted to literary kitties, but alas, I am. There is a good dose of humour in here as well but the book is not for children as there are a few sex scenes. Well-written and engaging story with fantastic art. The story starts off benign enough though slightly strange when a talking cat hires an online reporter to write his memoir. Things then become darker as his life story (rather 8 life stories) each become more ruthless, dishonest and chilling than the previous one leading the journalist and her friend to become suspicious of the cat, Burma,'s intentions. Until at the end the nature of human pow... moreer and greed is made clear when told through the voice of a feline. No cute cat in this book, to follow the usual cat book trend though, this time we meet an evil kittie. A good read I couldn't put down until I was finished.
review 2: If you like cats, don't read this book. Actually you know what, if you have anything else to read, read it instead. Here you'll see an author's fantasies of historical cats . . . and then how these cats died horrible deaths. I'd have forgiven all of this if we had a great ending. The cat saving the world, or the cat being the ultimate evil. But nope, we get . . . what we got. So yeah, this book isn't great. Avoid. less
