review 1: Clever stuff. Reads like a dream. This combines complexity with simplicity and farce with gritty reality. Almost impossible to describe. Charlie Summers is a magnificent invention who occupies the pages in a way that no other character I've ever read has. Charlie appears throughout the novel the way that old friends, welcome and unwelcome alike, appear through our lives. It's totally convincing and surprisingly moving. I should be getting on with work but it took over. One of those books that you feel saddened to finish.
review 2: A novel that I found myself enjoying thoroughly although I am not quite sure why. Perhaps it is because there is something soothing in the soft, mild way that people live in this novel and in the soft, mild way their feelings are expr
... moreessed. They all sound very English (whatever that might mean). It is also an easy read, in that it requires no effort. If I were to compare this reading experience to a real-life situation, I would say it is like drinking a nice glass of white wine (for those who enjoy white wine) while sitting on a terrace somewhere in France...as the protagonists do a number of times. less

A very readable book, but nowhere near as imaginative as Salmon Fishing in the Yemen.

Not up there with "Salmon Fishing in the Yemen", but an enjoyable enough read.
Emmalee
Well written and interesting even though not much actually happens.
Alejandro
A good holiday read and good comment on current economic crisis.
Guglian
Quite a downbeat ending, seems to be something of a trademark.
