review 1: I hadn't read any of Paul Torday's books before this one, but I did see the movie 'Salmon Fishing in the Yemen', so I thought I had some idea of his style or at least genre. I was wrong. For the first couple of chapters I was still trying to work out where this was going, then before I knew it I was hooked! Then it kind of darkened to a place I wasn't expecting. I'm still not sure of the message or how I feel about the resolution. I am most surprised by the Reading Group Discussion Questions. They don't ask the questions I would want to discuss, such as the role of mental illness and Big Pharma in the book. And what about Mrs McLeish??? Overall it was an entertaining and engaging book, which raised more questions for me than it answered!
review 2: Really enjoye... mored this. Compelling, exciting, a real page turner! I understood the characters, particularly the central protagonist (as it should be) and I really felt with her. The gradual realisation of the circumstances of her marriage and her husband's unknown life are revealed at just the right pace to keep you hooked. And I didn't predict it all - maybe I'm just stupid, but I seemed to work things out at about her speed, which suited me fine.I have to say, I felt that Salmon Fishing was really overrated - but this is a wonderful piece from Torday. less
