review 1: The story is set in the late 1800’s when daily life was very different and decorum was of the utmost importance. Mildred’s persecution is spearheaded by Josie’s resentment of her inheritance, something unusual at that time, and her need for revenge. She is a very unlikable character, getting under my skin – I wanted her mask to come off so badly and uncovered for who she really is. But will she get what she really deserves?In under 200 pages the author is able to deal with societies issues of that time with such depth and detail, painting a very clear and relatable picture. Each character comes to live as motives, history, life experiences and related emotions are described, giving great understanding of the underlying personal issues that influence the daily life ... moreof a small town, and how it is all knotted together even since previous generations.It is a story of humankind, the way we treat one another, what influences us in our actions, opinions and decisions and what happens when we judge what we don’t know and don’t understand. How come that some busy bodies can manipulate and lie their way around and get away with it? Even so, they get entangled in their webs. One of the central themes is the outrage concerning Oscar Wild when found with another man. It sets f a series of events for Edra and Mildred as they seek to protect themselves from the gossip and onslaught of certain towns people. Will they succeed at keeping them at bay? When is enough really enough? Will justice in some measure prevail? And at what cost? Is there anyone trustworthy to be found?I got really invested with a lot of the people/characters as I got to know them better. It gets you rooting for the underdog, the people who are at the mercy of the town gossip.Very well told with a beautiful flow in the story.
review 2: I have known people like the characters in Paulette's story! And they were compelling enough that I almost put down the book to save myself the irritation of dealing with the villains any more (that is a good thing!). She does a wonderful job of weaving a story around people who, just like in real life, we get to know better as the story moves forward - reasons why, true underlying opinions and character. I felt as though I was developing friendships with people who contain the kind of depth I truly would look for in friends in flesh rather than print. This is so worth reading...and worth pressing on through events and setbacks to a very satisfying conclusion. Just like real life! It is a story of love, friendship, and facing bullies. Loved it! less
