Children of the Lamp
review 1: The Eye of the Forest by P.B. Kerr is the fifth book of The Children of the Lamp series. It is another exciting adventure about genies or “Djinn”, as they like to be called. The two main characters of the book are John and Philippa Gaunt. The two children are twins and they live in New York City. The twins often help their Uncle Nimrod solve mysteries involving magic. Shortly into the book the twins and their Uncle Nimrod are sent on a magical mission to find some stolen ancient Incan artifacts. Their search leads them to the Amazon jungle where they discover that whoever stole the artifacts isn’t your average thief, but a mesmerist aided by two djinn. The twins have to test their magical abilities in order to escape the jungle alive because the thief is leavi... moreng traps behind to stop them. The djinn have to stop the thieves from performing a ritual that will destroy the world. Will the twins stop the thief before it is too late? If you like magic and mystery then this is a great book for you. It is full of twists and turns in the plot and is difficult to put down. Although it is over four hundred pages in length it is a quick read and easy to understand. The author is very good at portraying his ideas through writing and makes every chapter better than the last. I also loved the drama, the humor and the way the author makes magic seem like it could be real. The Eye of the Forest is a great book for everyone and I recommend it.
review 2: The intended audience of this book are people who like magic and fantasy, or who just want an easy and fun read. The main issue was that someone made it look like they discovered the Eye of the Forest - a mysterious door in the jungle - which supposedly leads to something that could make the world end. The good guys have to go and make sure that that doesn't happen. The time setting of this book could probably change, but the places were importan. They were in the forest most of the time, the title of the book included "Forest" and the book would have been completely different if it had taken place in a different setting. John and Philippa are the main protagonists, and they are twins, both djinns, and clever. The main antagonist was Virgil McCreeby, who was very strange and sly. John and Philippa were staying with Mr. Vodyannoy, a friend, for a little while. They met Zadie, another djinn, who made them promise to take her on their next adventure. Someone broke into two museums and stole three gold discs and a staff. Then, in the newspapers, there is a picture of a door in the forest, which led the Blue Djinn into thinking that bad djinn found it and could cause the end of the world. So she sent John, Philippa, Uncle Nimrod, Mr. Vodyannoy, and Groanin to solve the problem. They find out that Zadie is a spy for the notorious Virgil McCreeby and Dybbuk. They travel past giant millipedes, head-hunting indians, and many other things so they can stop McCreeby. They convince him that the ritual he is planning to do with the gold discs and staff will cause the end of the world, but it is harder to do so with Dybbuk. In the end, they stop the end of the world, save the twins' dad, but Dybbuk good side dies and he becomes more evil than ever. I liked that the book had interesting twists and turns, but it was a little weird. On page 222, it said, "As Philippa plunged down the huge underground shaft she wished for - what else? - a parachute." And on page 100, it said "This chichai is homemade. Muddy makes it with his own spit, right, Muddy?" I decided the theme was Those who are greedy often get bad consequences, because of what happened to Dybbuk. I would recommend this book to people who like fantasy, books about kids, and basically anyone else. Something unique about the book is that the main characters are genies, and not many books take place in a jungle with monstrously huge and dangerous creatures. less
