review 1: A friend gave me this book as a gift a couple of years ago and I just got around to reading it (the reading pile is high!) last week. As a person who has read most of P.D. James' mystery novels, I expected something long and complex. This book is short and simple — but simple in a good way. It's a smooth and interesting read, as if James were conversing over a cuppa. It's also a tour of past British (with only a few American) mystery writers: Doyle, Chesterton, Christie, Marsh, Allingham, Sayers, and others. I enjoyed reading James' assessments of certain novels and intend to re-read the ones I seem to have forgotten.Did I wish for more with this book? Yes, I would have liked to see a lot more on, say, 1970s-present. Despite that, I did enjoy the ... moreread.
review 2: I liked this book a lot. It gives a nice quick, condensed version of the history of Mystery/Detective Novels. I liked that P.D. James included both British and American authors because it didn't seem biased towards one or the other that way even though this book does lean primarily towards British mystery novels. It was nice to read about authors of mystery novels, both classics and modern authors and characters. I confess I am not very well versed in mystery novels so this book gave me a lot of new authors and books to try when I want to expand my horizons in mystery novels.I learned a lot from this book both the history of mystery novels but P.D. James also included how she and other authors went about writing a mystery novel. I thought this was quite interesting because every author have their own opinions and methods of writing and it was fun seeing how different authors' processes are unique or the same in some cases. Of course this book mentions Agatha Christie and Sherlock Holmes when talking about the history of the mystery novel but it also mentioned a lot of characters and authors that I have never heard of so I look forward to trying some of the new authors I discovered. It was a short, entertaining book and I would recommend it to anyone who likes mysteries and would love to learn more about their favorite authors/characters. I also would recommend it to anyone who likes P.D. James as an author. The only reason I did not give it 5 stars was because in the middle or in a few sections when P.D. James seemed to be giving a lot of examples or talking about a lot of books at one time, since I don't know to many mystery novels/authors, it seemed to get bogged down by names authors and how they approached a certain situation or character. This only happened once or twice in the entire book. less
