review 1: I wish I could figure out how to do half stars -- this would have been 3-1/2. Kind of noirish, a touch of magical realism. Three brothers, exactly one year apart in age each (exactly -- day, hour, minute), Mum leaves when they are young but turns up later, Dad's kind of useless. The brothers take pains to grow apart from one another, but their lives are intricately intertwined. Great London atmosphere from the 50s. One review claimed it was a satire on current London lit scene, but I can't say that I recognized anyone. Not even Martin Amis, and we know he's always fair game. Great characters anyway. Sparky!
review 2: The book follows the fortunes of three brothers who are all born on the same day, one year apart. The writer makes this statement right a
... moret the beginning of the book and the reader is left to wonder at the significance of this event. The mother leaves the household abruptly and, for some reason, her absence is never explained to the boys. The oldest, Harry, goes into journalism, the middle brother, Daniel, escapes in books and goes off to Cambridge and the youngest, Sam, is drawn to the marginalized and downtrodden. There are unexplained, supernatural elements scattered throughout the book and the reader is left to wonder the significance of such elements. A quick read, highly recommended if one is into Dickens or London. less
