review 1: This one really surprised me: subjects I'm not super familiar with (Buckminster Fuller, punk rock, suburban teens), set in Iowa, and it totally sucked me in. The 16-year old boy at the center of the story is a bit of an anachronism of his grandmother's making and ideals. She is a devoted follower of Fuller's ideas, and he is a strangely-raised but compassionate young man. His forced interaction with the world outside his grandmother's schoolhouse of the future is very well told. Over all the novel is a stunning achievement and high quality piece of fiction. I really enjoyed this one, even the heartbreaking bits.
review 2: Started listening to the audiobook off and on yesterday. Not sure if it's the format or what, but I could only get through the 4th chapter o
... moref nine. I found that I could care less if this poor boy was able to keep his new friend, if they were able to make a punk rock band(or even if he learned how to play an instrument), if granny lived much longer, really had psychic abilities when she slept or if she levitated, or if the boy's crush Meredith actually gave him a chance or not. I returned this audiobook to my library last night. Bored though. less
