review 1: Bobby, a young boy, thinks his teacher is a monster. Well, Bobby wants to throw paper airplanes in class and Ms. Kirby won't let him. One Saturday morning his impression of her changes when he runs into her at the park and they find they have a great deal in common and they have a great time quacking at ducks and sharing a favorite spot. Ms. Kirby even encourages Bobby to throw a paper airplane. The illustrations are fun - Ms. Kirby as a monster is big and green and as the reader watches she turns into a petite lady with curls and a lovely smile. Everyone who has discovered a teacher has a life outside of the classroom will be able to relate to this story and it will make them smile.
review 2: Every elementary student will recognize the weirded-out feeling
... more Bobby gets seeing his teacher outside of school. I like that as Bobby and the teacher get to know each other a bit, the teacher transforms from monster to human. It'd be interesting to discuss with 2nd graders on up (who aren't as literal as the youngers) if the teacher changed, or if Bobby's perception of her changed, or both. Good to read at the beginning of the year. less
