review 1: Liam is a young boy who discovers some colorful plant life atop an old elevated railroad line in his city. Slowly and surely, he learns how to become a gardener and the curious garden he helps create stretches throughout the city. I loved this book. I thought the story had a great environmental message and the artwork had a very appealing vintage-vibe. I think preschoolers and early elementary aged children would also appreciate this story since they are also curious about their world and surroundings.
review 2: The Curious Garden is a wonderful read aloud for Earth Day or any kind of environmental study or science unit. The author, Peter Brown, is a New Yorker and he includes a note about the Highline project at the end of the story. This book would be int
... moreeresting to read to students who have actually visited the Highline (or are planning to take a class field trip there!) as it talks about the importance of nature and its role in a large city. Children who do not know about the Highline would benefit from some background information prior to reading or listening to the story. The main character, Liam, finds a city without gardens to be dreary and depressing. He is a boy who loves nature and he becomes inspired when he sees nature thriving in the most unlikely of places, an abandoned railway. He takes it upon himself to tend to this garden that has survived alone for so long, and he begins to see that one person really can make a big difference. Members of the community begin to join in and help him transform the railway into a wonderful, thriving garden for all to enjoy. This book would lend itself to a discussion about joining together as a community, working together on a singular goal, or simply the importance of nature. less

maybe a little heavy handed, but the art is lovely and the message reached my preschool boys.

This book is magical. It's hope for a greener earth wrapped up in a children's book :)
