Red Lanterns Vol. I
review 1: When I saw that the Red Lantern corps was getting their own series in the New 52 reboot I was questioning how long that would last. With a GL title already dedicated to a Justice League of the emotional corps (New Guardians), I thought it would be hard to flesh out all these Red Lanterns and turn them into the heroes or anti-heroes that DC would want. Making things a little worse, as this is a Green Lanterns universe title, it's cannon DOES carry over from the Flashpoint event. This means all the confusing back story of the Red Lanterns formation and interactions with the other corps is already prerequisite for reading this title. The first six issues mainly focus on two things; Atrocitus coming to terms with utilizing the RLC's rage for more important goals, and Atrocitus'... more power being challenged by the vampiric Bleez. The ocean of blood serves to restore some intelligence to the previously rage incarnate red lanterns. In the process it also fleshed out a few of their member's backstories, which were all enjoyable in their own merits. The conflict starts to become more intense with the disappearance of Krona's corpse, which is what will carry us into future issues. The collection ends with the birth of a new human red lantern. I thoroughly enjoyed this top to bottom for what it offered. It was a lot of origin stories for the most part tied together in an arc that I'm sure will pick up in volume two. The writing is very good, and it does a great job casting the RLC as third party anti-heroes within the lantern corner of the DC universe. I love the designs for all of the red lanterns and Atrocitus maintains a level of bad ass even though he spends most of the volume looking weak.Perhaps my main complaint was the art. While not bad by any means the obligatory red overkill that comes with any RLC appearance (or any lantern title) wore on me after a while, with everything blending together in one bull like rage inducing read. It's just that one color bright red for the most part too. A different artist could really give this title a whole unique identity withing the lantern cosmos. This gets a middle 3. Very interested to see where this title goes and how it interacts with the other Green Lantern universe stuff I'm reading in the New 52.
review 2: This was... not at all what I was expecting. Red Lanterns are all about rage and violence, so I expected this to be even more over-the-top than Deathstroke was. Instead, it's almost a meditation on what it means to have rage, and what is a justification for anger, and what motivates rage. This is probably one of the most philosophical books I've seen in a mainstream DC publication. Unfortunately, being different doesn't necessarily make it good. I've never been a huge fan of Red Lanterns, and there's nothing in this collection that makes me want to more. Angst-ridden leader who doesn't trust his underlings? Not really that interesting. Just different. less

Human RL was bleh, Bleez bum bombardment, cat torture and retribution. Still liked it though.

Really good. Not at all what I was expecting. I don't understand the blood mist, though...

A nice introduction to a great spinoff from the lantern series

Not bad, but the title doesn't have enough reason to exist.
