review 1: This is a pretty solid collection of short stories. It benefits from some eclecticism--there's one story that's clearly fantasy--and from some tweaking of the conventions of mystery fiction--in a few stories, for instance, the killer gets away with it. However, Robinson is generally stronger in the long form, I think; his short stories sometimes feel a bit programmatic. Certainly, the strongest story here is also the longest, a Banks novella that one might see as a sort of Banks origin story. It's chronologically the earliest story (that I've read, anyway, and discounting the sections of some of the novels that revisit Banks's childhood), showing us Banks in London, first deciding to leave the city behind for Yorkshire, in the midst of a pretty solid and rather creepy stor... morey about a serial killer of prostitutes.
review 2: Excellent short story collection, including a few about Banks. I am, however, choosing to ignore particular off-canon bits of the last story about his time in London before moving out to Eastvale. Most of the time I was reading that story it was like I was reading about a completely different character. All of the other stories were so good, on the other hand, that it still deserves five stars IMO. less

Decided I really don't care for short stories, rather something more meaty.
