review 1: Abattoir Blues is an improvement on Children of the Revolution, which I found to be too mass-market, formulaic and bland. I liked the expansion on some of the usual but not deeply explored characters, such as Winsome and Burgess. I think that added to the novel rather than detracted from it, as the Banks character hasn't progressed, and hasn't remained sufficiently engaging for me. Overall, Banks was more of a secondary character to me in how this story was presented, and when he did appear, he was the usual Banks, but not doing anything interesting enough to make me care what he was up to. As a Banks story, I would rank it as 2.5; as an overall mystery, I would rank it as 3.5. I think some of the sideline stories were well constructed and played out, with definite 4 star ... morequalities for plot, characterization and writing.
review 2: I'm always a bit skeptical when books contain endorsements instead of any type of synopsis, but it works for this book. Very little of the book is given away, which is perfect, as the best part of this book is the well thought out plot, and the way the author methodically fits together every piece of the puzzle. We start with Detective Banks, Annie Cabot and their team investigating what seems like small time rural crime. A wealthy farmer reports his tractor missing, which is consistent with a streak of rural crime in the area. As the detectives investigate, these small time crimes are slowly linked to deadly car crashes, missing fugitives and eventually a murder. Unlike so many in this genre, what sets this book about is how carefully the investigation unfolds. I received this book through a Goodreads Giveaway, and while I admittedly was unfamiliar with the Detective Banks series prior to that, I'll definitely be ordering a few more books in the series. less

Enjoyable but not best Banks novel read. Agree with view that Banks somewhat sidelined and faded.

Another enjoyable DCI Banks investigation which kept me guessing pretty much up to the end!
