review 1: Peter Beagle is an excellent fantasy writer and I enjoy his style, but this was the first time I read his short stories. For me, a short story has to be damn good to get 4 or 5 stars, and although some of these stories were definitely strong, many of them were only 3 stars for me. Its mostly a simple matter of personal taste. I prefer well-defined shorts with clear endings and beginnings; it must not feel like a book chapter, and I should feel a satisfying sense of completion by the end. I also look for memorable atmosphere and language. My favorite stories were "Uncle Chaim and Aunt Rifke and the Angel," "By Moonlight," and "Chandail." Overall, this is a nice collection and I'm sure many would enjoy it.
review 2: I'm not feeling especially analytical right now
... more so I'm not going to go into a lot of detail about this collection. I liked most of the stories in this book, loved some of them, and was absolutely blown away by the anchor story, "Chandail." Why that story wasn't up for multiple awards in its year of release, I don't know. I'll just chalk it up as one more of the multitude of things I simply don't understand. less
