review 1: This was a brilliant book. Philip Kerr further extends, or rather challenges Bernie Gunther by sending him back to Germany to embroil him in the post-war recriminations and repatriation of the war criminals. The only tricky bit is keeping up with all the flashbacks, which are critical to the telling of the story. It fill in much of his back story, including his time in POW camps in Russia. Once again, Bernie surprised me at the end of the novel. Is there nothing he won't do to survive?
review 2: The most recent Bernie Gunther novel, published in 2011. It takes events from all previous novels and mixes them with history to give a telling of Bernie’s life before, during, and after the war. It involves Eric Mielke who was really the minister of state security
... morein the GDR and many other real people. It starts with Bernie in Cuba where he has come from Argentina and being captured by the CIA and taken to Germany for interrogation. The year is 1954 and he recounts events. The book skips around but it very effective. The author’s note at the end gives many references to noon fiction works about the war. I really should wait a bit and read this one again. less
