review 1: This book was not what I was expecting. The jacket made it sound like a series of interviews with people who have experienced difficult things who speak about why their faith did (or did not) matter. Instead, it was the author's description of a series of speaking engagements he did. He would describe through his own eyes, rather than the participants, the situation. Then he would include the sermon/talk he chose to give to these people. In different hands this might have been a terrible book, but it turns out that he is a rather good speaker (or I imagine he would be) and his sermons are very interesting reading. I did wish that he included a little more of the situation from the eyes of the participants, but he describes a scene well so it wasn't hard to picture. It wasn... more't the book I was led to expect, but it was an intriguing read. I liked that he kept it non-denominational so it was accessible to all Christians rather than a select few. It is very Christian focused so I'm not sure if people of other faith backgrounds would enjoy it. I'd recommend this for those interested in theology or missionary work.
review 2: First let me say that I really like Phillip Yancey and find him a great christian author. However this one wasn't my favorite. I found all the stories and experiences very inspiring, insightful, and moving. I just don't know that the title "What Good is God?" was necessarily answered. As a strong christian faith filled woman I know that God is amazing, I know what good he is! I just don't know that if someone who is looking for answers and reassurance read this would have their question answered. I'm afraid they would just hear several bad experiences. Otherwise I did like the book and I still love Philip Yancey! less

Definitely a good-read, but not the best from Philip Yancey.

Set of Yancy's talks. Not his best but still good.
