review 1: This is a good book for the times we are living in. So many Christians are at war with the world around them. And in the process, people on the outside don't wish to hear the good news. What they see of the Bible--based on the Christians who say they live it--is condemnation. That isn't drawing anyone in.Not to long ago, I read an article about a lesbian who went to church with her girlfriend for kicks. What she encountered was such an outpouring of grace and acceptance that she kept going back. The relationship with her girlfriend ended, and she became a member of the church. My mom used to say that you draw more bees with honey than vinegar. That's still true, and a good thing to remember. I recommend this book.
review 2: For the past two years I have focu
... moresed many of my spiritual questions on how we as Christians are viewed in a secular culture. I've asked myself, "HOW should we treat those we disagree with?" Yancey's book has put into words many thoughts and convictions I've recently had. He tackles the issues of Christians in politics, art, activism, and as a minority in an increasingly secular society. For 2 years now I have wrestled with these thoughts and Yancey sums up my conclusions succinctly when he writes, "Christians best thrive as a minority, a counterculture. Historically, when they reach a majority they too have yielded to the temptations of power in ways that are clearly anti-gospel."He challenged his Christian readers to use caution when choosing to turn Christian morals into legislature by saying,"The church works best as a separate force, a conscience to society that keeps itself at arms length from the state. The closer it gets, the less effectively it can challenge the surrounding culture and the more perilously it risks losing its central message...We have no charge to "Christianize" the United states or any other country - an impossible goal anyway."He takes a stance for practicing grace towards those we disagree with, living the gospel in our daily lives and letting or faith and love of Christ speak louder than our arguments. less
