review 1: Liked it a lot until the last page even though I didn't buy the presumption that Poe would be found guilty of murder. Weren't Isaac's finger prints on the ball that killed the Swede? The relationships between the protagonists needed to be resolved. Did Poe and Isaac simply walk away from the only relationship in their lives that made sense and mattered? What happens to Harris? What happens to Lee?
review 2: Meyer’s debut often reads like a checklist of first novel clichés. Over description? Check. Huge plot holes? Check. Do the Hemingway-and-Steinbeck strings show? Check & check. That said, Meyer is a major American talent and, as “The Son” proved, he gets better. The story of a recession devastated Pennsylvania steel town, this is unflinching, bare
... more-knuckles prose. Flawed, but Meyer gets points for fearlessness. less

It's dark but it painted a sad but true portrait of the lost American dream. I like this author.

An incredibly compelling opening but by halfway this novel was dragging.
