review 1: A visceral and descriptive view of the culture shock between Western egalitarianism and a culture influenced by religious extremists. The author gives the reader a detailed account of her experience and the struggles of being an outcast in regard to culture, gender, and religion. There are times where side stories and her personal expression of emotions can be a bit too detailed extending the book to be too long, but it was a good read with an interesting, vicarious experience that I appreciated.
review 2: The writing is not polished and it is written more like a journal - jumping from topic to topic - than a novel, but the subject matter is fascinating. The author is rather opinionated, which does color some of her observations and not necessarily in a deroga
... moretory way, but you definitely get a sense of who she is and what she believes in through her observations of others. The descriptions - of which there are many - can be tedious. I understand that she is trying to create a very clear picture of her subjects and surroundings, but as a reader you sometimes wish she'd stop looking around so much and talk more about her relationships with her subjects. less

Annoying at times...requires some skimming. But also beautiful, enchanting and eye opening.

Interesting perspective. Did not endear me to the Saudi people but was insightful.
