review 1: I gave this four but I could have gone for five; I loved it though I think, honestly, I missed a lot. I'd have liked to have read in a class or book club bc many of the allegories/ references seem so meaningful and I know I'm missing something. They're definitely entertaining in their own right, for sure, but knowing I'm missing the point was distracting at times. I read it after finishing an unnecessary woman and I wanted to spend more time with the author; this definitely accomplished that goal. It's no small task, weaving in and out of these major stories. But really an excellent story teller and a fascinating perspective you certainly don't get every day! I loved the juxtaposition of reality and mythology stories, but again, I'm not sure I understood all that the book ... morewas trying to accomplish.
review 2: an astonishing and seamless interplay between current events, past history, and mythological stories. A Hakawati is a professional story teller, and that provides the premise for this torrent of stories involving a family of story tellers. the contemporary blends into the past and even into mythology, and the author operates on the assumption that that is close to reality, at least for some Middle Eastern families. less
